Podcast #8: Talking to a brick wall!

Posted on Mar 30, 2011

Today’s podcast sees Craig being joined by Kate Graham and James McLuckie to discuss the subject of internal communications.

IMAG0488

How are businesses enabling technologies to enhance and enrich their internal conversations?

What tools are organisations and individuals turning to enable their staff to connect, communicate and collaborate?

Kate and James provide some answers to the above questions whilst Craig complains about them rubbing salt in his wounds!

  1. Hi Craig – another good podcast that has made me think about how we use this technology within our businesses.

Like you, we don’t have access to facebook/twitter/youtube/any social media sites (insert ‘useful’ here) so I know how difficult it can be. However – there were a couple of things I found interesting – Kate mentioned that we wouldn’t train just one person and expect them to roll this out – but yet we do this with communication within the business (and of course team leaders forgetting to tell their teams etc) – and also that there was only 6 people in your business who took up the option for a text on their personal phone if their training had been cancelled/changed etc. Is this just indicative of the business not buying into this type of technology – or was it that the delegates would still be paid although they turned up and didn’t do any training? The only other option would be that the business insisted that this would happen, but then that goes agains the grain of collaboration and engagement!!!

We’re having a re-launch of our sharepoint site for our team, and so far – a few more people have started contributing than the ‘usual suspects’. Before now – contribution to the site was in our ‘objectives’ which of course meant that it died a death….

    Keep up the good work!!

  3. @Dames20 Hi Damian, many thanks for taking the time to not only listen the the recent podcast but to leave feedback. This blog was only ever intended to be a reflective piece on my ‘new’ learning journey into using learning technologies, so that fact that this recent post has been of benefit to you and provided you with catalyst to consider how you are using technology within your business in great news!

You raise a valid point in relation to the lack of take-up for the text-messaging notification system. Interestingly, the very group of people who were supposedly ‘unhappy’ about coming on-site to receive training that had been cancelled, were the same group of people who had the lowest % uptake to the proposed system. It certainly made me question their motivations for asking in the first place and, like you, a hint of suspicion hung over the lack of buy-in once we had proposed a solution!

Best of luck with the relaunch of your sharepoint system. Is this a system that your IT team have mandated you use, or are there other factors involved?

Once again, thanks for your feedback and I hope you’ll be able to join us in a future podcast.

    Craig
